Begonias are a vast genus of roughly 2,000 species valued for their ornate foliage and long-lasting blooms — Rex, Polka Dot, and Iron Cross types are prized for leaf pattern alone. Most thrive in bright, indirect light; direct sun scorches their delicate leaves. Water moderately, allowing the top inch of soil to dry between waterings and ensuring good drainage to prevent root rot. Begonias are toxic to cats and dogs — all species contain soluble calcium oxalates, with the tubers being most concentrated — so keep them out of reach of pets.
