Armenian Speedwell (Gentian speedwell) care

Light

Most houseplants will scorch where armenian speedwell thrives. Give it the windowsill you'd otherwise leave empty because everything else burned there. Requires full sun for at least 6 hours daily; shade causes sparse, open growth and significantly reduces flowering. Ideal on a south- or west-facing rock garden slope. A plant moved abruptly from low light to direct sun bleaches in 48 hours — always acclimatise over a week.

Watering

Aim for every 10–14 days during the growing season; little to none in winter. for armenian speedwell, but treat that as a starting point rather than a rule. A south-facing summer windowsill will dry the pot twice as fast as a north-facing winter room. Lift the pot; if it feels noticeably lighter than it did wet, water it. Drought-tolerant once established — allow soil to dry almost completely between waterings. Wet, cold conditions in winter are more damaging than summer drought.

Soil and pot

Armenian Speedwell grows best in very sharply drained, gritty, alkaline to neutral soil (ph 6.5–8.0).. Mimics the thin, rocky alkaline soils of its native highlands. Mix standard loam with at least 50% coarse grit or pea gravel to ensure rapid drainage. A pot with a working drainage hole is non-negotiable for this species — even free-draining mix will turn soggy in a closed planter. If you love the look of a decorative pot without a hole, use it as a cachepot around an inner nursery pot you can lift out to water.

Humidity and temperature

Armenian Speedwell sits happiest at around Low (30–45% RH). humidity and -25 to 28°C (-13 to 82°F). Adapted to continental mountain climates with low atmospheric humidity. Avoid humid, still conditions that promote fungal issues around the tight foliage carpet. If you keep the room above year-round and avoid placing the plant near a cold draught, a hot radiator, or an air-conditioning vent, you have already handled the two biggest indoor stressors.

Fertilising

Feed armenian speedwell sparingly. Topdress with a very dilute balanced fertiliser once in early spring only; overfertilising results in lax, disease-prone growth in this naturally lean-soil species. Skip fertiliser entirely on a stressed, recently-repotted, or actively wilting plant — fertiliser salts make damage worse, not better. Wait for a round of healthy new growth before resuming a feeding rhythm.
