Genus guide
Lavandula — 25 species
Lavandula — lavenders — is a genus of aromatic shrubby perennials native to the Mediterranean, Canary Islands, and parts of Asia, including the widely grown Lavandula angustifolia, Lavandin hybrids like Grosso, and compact Vera forms. They demand full sun and excellent drainage; overwatering in heavy soil is the primary cause of failure. Once established, lavenders are highly drought-tolerant and need watering only when the soil is nearly dry. All lavender species are toxic to cats and dogs according to the ASPCA, with linalool and linalyl acetate causing nausea, vomiting, and decreased appetite.
