Genus guide
Hoya — 197 species
Part of the Hoyas & relatives family (Apocynaceae)
Hoyas are a genus of tropical climbers and trailers celebrated for their waxy, often fragrant flower clusters and thick, succulent-like leaves — from the heart-shaped Sweetheart plant to the vigorous Hoya pubicalyx and classic Wax plant. They prefer bright indirect light and are famously drought-tolerant; allow the potting mix to dry out almost completely between waterings. Overwatering is the primary cause of decline. According to the ASPCA, all Hoya species are non-toxic to cats and dogs, making them an excellent choice for pet-friendly homes.

Hoya — frequently asked questions
Are Hoya plants toxic to cats and dogs?
Most Hoya are pet-safe. Of the 197 Hoya species we cover, 197 are non-toxic on the ASPCA list and 0 carry a toxic or mildly-toxic rating. Even so, confirm the individual species before trusting it around pets.
How much light do Hoya plants need?
Most Hoya do best in bright indirect light. If yours stretches toward the window or loses its variegation it wants more light; scorched or bleached leaves mean it is getting too much direct sun.
Are Hoya easy to care for?
Hoya are moderate to grow: the main requirement is a genuinely bright spot out of harsh midday sun. Get the light right and the rest of their care follows.
How many Hoya varieties are there?
Growli's care library covers 197 Hoya species and varieties — browse them all above. They share a similar light, water and soil pattern, so once you learn one Hoya, the rest follow closely.
