Brassica — 61 species
Brassica is a cool-season genus of roughly 37 accepted wild species plus hundreds of cultivated forms, spanning familiar vegetables such as kale, cabbage, broccoli, and turnip. All prefer full sun — at least six hours daily — and consistently moist, fertile, well-drained soil; aim for approximately one inch of water per week, more during hot spells. Toxicity varies across the genus: edible crop varieties are safe for people, but glucosinolates in wild and ornamental brassicas can cause gastrointestinal and thyroid issues in dogs and cats. Always check the specific species before planting around pets.
