Pruning rainbow chard — FAQ
When should I prune rainbow chard?
Throughout the growing season once outer leaves reach 20–30 cm; remove flower stalks as soon as they appear. Harvest outer stems by cutting cleanly at the base with a sharp knife, leaving the central growing point and inner leaves intact. Remove no more than one-third of the plant at a time. Snap off any emerging flower/seed stalks immediately to prevent bolting.
How often does rainbow chard need pruning?
Every 2–3 weeks during active growth. Rainbow chard is a cut-and-come-again crop that thrives with regular harvesting of outer leaves. Remove outer stems when they reach 20–30 cm, cutting cleanly at the base — this is both harvesting and pruning in one step. Remove any bolting flower stalks promptly to extend the leaf-harvest season.
