Rainbow Chard problems — and how to fix them
Rainbow Chard (Beta vulgaris subsp. cicla 'Rainbow Chard') is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Bolting
Heat, drought stress or a cold snap after sowing makes plants run to seed early; keep moisture even, sow after the last hard frost, and pick regularly.
Leaf miner
Beet leaf-miner larvae tunnel pale blistery trails inside the leaves. Squash mines, remove badly affected leaves, and protect young plants with insect-proof mesh.
Cercospora and downy mildew
Grey or brown leaf spots and yellowing in wet, crowded conditions. Space plants well, water at the base, and remove infected leaves promptly.
Slugs and snails
Seedlings and tender new growth are a favourite target; use barriers, traps or wildlife-safe controls, especially in damp spring weather.
