Ranunculus8 species

Ranunculus is a diverse genus of buttercups and water crowfoots, ranging from the aquatic Ranunculus aquatilis — which roots in still or slow-moving water at 15–60 cm depth — to the garden-famous Ranunculus asiaticus 'Cloni' and 'Elegance' cultivars grown for their densely layered blooms. Garden types prefer full sun (at least six hours) and consistently moist but well-drained soil; the aquatic species need full sun to partial shade. All Ranunculus species are toxic to cats and dogs: they contain ranunculin, which converts to the irritant protoanemonin when chewed, causing oral ulcers, hypersalivation, vomiting, and diarrhoea.
