Genus guide
Pennisetum — 13 species
Pennisetum is a genus of ornamental fountain grasses prized for their graceful, arching stems and feathery, bottlebrush seed heads. Varieties such as red head fountain grass, African feather grass, and oriental fountain grass are at home in borders, containers, or mixed beds. They perform best in full sun — at least six hours of direct light daily — and prefer consistently moist, well-drained soil, though established plants tolerate short dry spells. According to the ASPCA, all Pennisetum species are non-toxic to cats and dogs, making them a safe pick for pet-friendly gardens.
