Most people brace for winter by worrying about the cold. But in a heated home, the temperature near your plants rarely swings far enough to hurt them — the thing that quietly collapses is light. Days get short, the sun sits low, and cloud does the rest. A plant that thrived on a windowsill in July can be running on a fraction of that light by December, and the symptoms creep in slowly enough that most owners miss them until the plant looks visibly sad. This guide is about seeing the light problem early and fixing it with the cheapest tools first.

Why light, not cold, is the real winter bottleneck
Three things gang up on your plants between roughly November and February. Days are short — in much of the US and UK, midwinter delivers only around eight hours or fewer of usable daylight. The sun also sits far lower in the sky, so its light travels through more atmosphere and arrives weaker. And winter skies are simply greyer, with more overcast days scattering what light there is. Between the short days, the low angle of the sun and the frequent overcast weather, the light reaching an indoor plant in midwinter is a fraction of what it got at the summer peak.
The result is dramatic. A south-facing window that pours several hours of direct sun onto a plant in June might give it only a couple of hours of much weaker sun in December. Indoors, light is already the most limiting factor for growth even in summer — winter just tightens the screw.
Two more things make it worse than it looks. Light falls off far faster with distance than our eyes suggest, because our pupils adjust and hide the drop — as a rule of thumb, intensity roughly halves within about three feet of the glass, so a plant six feet back can be living on a small fraction of what one on the sill receives. And our eyes are poor light meters: a room that reads as "bright" to you may be dim by a plant's standards. That combination is why winter light starvation sneaks up on people.
Meanwhile, indoor temperature is usually a non-issue. Central heating keeps most homes comfortably in a plant's tolerance range — the heating problems that do exist are about dry air and hot draughts, which we cover in houseplants and central heating, not cold. So if a plant is struggling in January, suspect light first.
The signs of winter light starvation
Under-lit plants tell you clearly if you know the vocabulary. Watch for these, and note that they show up in new growth first:
- Leggy, stretched stems (etiolation). The classic tell. When light is short, a plant elongates its stems and spaces its leaves further apart, reaching for the window — the gaps between leaves (the internodes) grow noticeably longer, and the new leaves come in thinner and paler. Weak, floppy stems that can't hold themselves up are a light problem, not a feeding one.
- Leaning toward the light. If new growth arcs toward the window and the plant looks lopsided, it's telling you exactly where the light is — and that there isn't enough of it.
- Pale, smaller new leaves. Fresh leaves that emerge undersized and washed-out, rather than deep green, mean the plant can't fund normal growth. Variegated plants may also lose their patterning and revert to plain green to grab more light.
- Dropping older leaves. A plant short on light will sacrifice its oldest, lowest leaves first — it can't afford to keep them lit. Steady leaf drop from the bottom in midwinter usually points here.
- Stalled or spindly growth, and dropped flower buds. Growth that thins out and gets lanky, or flower buds that form and then abort before opening, are both light-limited outcomes.

One important caveat: etiolated growth doesn't heal. Those long, pale, stretched stems won't shorten back up once light returns, and moving a plant abruptly from deep shade into strong light can shock it. So the goal is to catch the problem early and, when spring comes, to reintroduce brighter light gradually rather than dumping a shade-grown plant onto a scorching sill.
Fix 1: move plants toward the light (it's free)
Before you buy anything, rearrange. Because light drops so steeply with distance, walking a plant a few feet closer to a window can more than double the light it receives. In winter specifically, the priorities flip from summer:
- Promote plants to your brightest windows. The brightest indoor light comes from a south-facing window (north-facing in the Southern Hemisphere). Plants that spent summer set back from a hot south window — to avoid scorch — often want that front-row spot in winter, when the sun is weak enough to be a gift rather than a threat. Move your most light-hungry plants (crotons, citrus, most flowering plants, string-of-pearls and other succulents) closest to the glass.
- Get right up against the pane. On the windowsill or within a foot of it is a genuinely different world from three feet back. Just watch that leaves aren't pressed against cold glass on frosty nights.
- Open the curtains and clear the sill. Sheer curtains, half-closed blinds, tall furniture and a jungle of taller plants all steal light from the plants behind them. In winter, let every photon through.
- Borrow reflected light. A wall painted white or a mirror opposite a window bounces usable light back onto plants. It's a small effect, but free.
Fix 2: clean the leaves and the glass
This is the most under-rated winter fix. Over months, a fine film of household dust settles on leaves and forms a haze on window glass — and both sit directly between your plant and the light it's already short of. Dust on foliage physically blocks light from reaching the leaf surface where photosynthesis happens, and grimy glass cuts the light entering the room before it even arrives.
The fix takes ten minutes:
- Wipe leaves. Support each leaf and wipe both sides gently with a soft, damp cloth. For plants with many small leaves, a lukewarm shower or a swish in a sink of tepid water does the same job. Skip the leaf-shine sprays — they can clog the pores leaves breathe through.
- Clean the windows — inside and, if you can reach, outside. A season's grime on the glass measurably dims the room.
- Do it monthly through winter. Homes are dustier in the closed-up heating season, so a quick wipe every few weeks keeps leaves working at full capacity.
Fix 3: rotate, and reassess the whole room
Because winter light comes from essentially one direction — the window — plants grow lopsided fast. Give each pot a quarter turn every week or two so every side gets its turn facing the glass; you'll keep the plant symmetrical and stop it leaning.
It's also worth taking the whole room's inventory. Winter is the moment to be honest about which spots simply can't sustain a plant and to consolidate your greenery into the brightest areas. Crucially, low light changes how you water. A plant photosynthesising slowly in dim, cool conditions uses far less water, so the same watering routine that suited it in summer will now leave the soil soggy and invite root rot. When a grow light is actually worth it
Sometimes rearranging isn't enough — the days are just too short for what you're growing. A grow light is worth the money when:
- You're keeping high-light plants (most succulents and cacti, citrus, crotons, anything that flowers) through a dark winter and they're stretching despite being on your best window.
- Your home is genuinely short on bright windows — a north-facing flat, a basement room, a space where every window is shaded by buildings or trees.
- You want to keep plants actively growing rather than just ticking over, or you're overwintering something precious you can't risk losing.
For plants that are content to rest quietly through winter — a pothos or snake plant that's simply pausing until spring — a grow light is a nice-to-have, not a necessity.

- Choose a full-spectrum LED. LEDs are cheap to run, produce very little heat (so they won't scorch nearby leaves), and last for years. A full-spectrum white light covers all the wavelengths foliage plants need and looks normal in a living room, unlike the old blurple panels.
- Position and timing. For foliage houseplants, a common starting point is a light positioned roughly 12 to 24 inches above the leaves, run about 12 to 14 hours a day. Flowering plants generally want it a little closer and a little longer. Adjust by watching the plant — stretching means move it closer or add hours; bleached, crisping spots mean back it off.
- Put it on a timer. Plants need a real day-night rhythm, so more is not better — leaving a light on 24/7 stresses them. A cheap plug timer makes the whole thing effortless and consistent. Match the on-hours to daytime so the plant's clock stays sane.
A grow light isn't a confession of failure; for anyone with a dark home and demanding plants, it's simply the tool that replaces sunshine the sky isn't providing.
