Nothing changes a houseplant's world faster than the day the heating switches on. One week the air in your living room is comfortable; the next, the boiler is running, the radiators are warm, and the calathea you nursed all summer starts crisping at the edges. It rarely means you did anything wrong. It means the room around the plant changed — and central heating creates three separate problems at once: it dries the air, it bakes anything sitting too close to a heat source, and it leaves cold glass behind windows that chills leaves overnight. Why central heating is hard on tropical plants

Most popular houseplants — pothos, monstera, philodendron, calathea, ferns, peace lily — come from humid, tropical regions where the air sits somewhere around 70–90% relative humidity. Your heated living room is nothing like that. Warm air can hold far more moisture than cold air, so when a heating system warms up a room without adding any water, the relative humidity drops sharply. In heated homes across the US and UK, winter indoor humidity commonly falls to around 20–30%, and in a well-sealed, hard-run house it can dip lower still. Most foliage houseplants are comfortable at roughly 40–60%, so the gap is real.

Plants feel this as transpiration stress. In dry air, water evaporates out through the leaves faster than the roots can replace it — even when the soil is still moist. The visible result is the classic winter signature: crispy brown leaf tips, browning edges, curling margins, and slow, undersized new growth. Because the leaves look thirsty, the instinct is to water more, which soaks roots that are already wet enough and invites rot. The three winter hazards, mapped to your room

Before you move anything, it helps to see the room the way your plant does. Central heating creates three distinct zones of trouble:

  • The hot zone — directly above or beside a radiator, next to a heating vent, or near a wood stove. Air here is hot and bone-dry, and it rises straight up past any plant sitting on the radiator shelf.
  • The dry zone — the rest of the heated room. Not dangerously hot, but running at low humidity for months.
  • The cold zone — the few centimetres of air trapped between a window pane and the curtain or blind. On a frosty night this pocket can get far colder than the room, and any leaf touching the glass gets colder still.

A plant can be stressed by all three at once: baked by day on a radiator sill, dried by the ambient heating, and chilled at night against the glass. The good news is that each has a straightforward fix.

Fix 1: Get plants off the heat

The single most common winter mistake is a plant sitting on a shelf or sill directly above a radiator. The rising column of hot, dry air pulls moisture out of the leaves faster than anywhere else in the room, and the soil dries out unevenly too. Heating vents and the tops of wood-burning stoves do the same thing.

The distance rule of thumb: hold your hand where the plant sits. If you can feel warmth coming off the radiator or vent, the plant can feel it too — move it further away. A gardener's rough test, echoed by the RHS, is that if the spot feels warm to your hand, it's still too close. You don't need a lot of distance — often just shifting a plant from the radiator shelf to a nearby table or plant stand, a foot or two clear of the rising heat, is enough.

Practical placements that work:

  • Move plants off radiator shelves onto a side table, plant stand, or the floor nearby, out of the direct rising heat.
  • If a radiator sits under your only good window, use a shelf bracket or tall stand to lift the plant to the side of the heat rather than directly over it.
  • Fit a radiator shelf (the kind that deflects heat outward into the room) if you must keep plants on the ledge above — it throws the hot air forward instead of straight up.
  • Keep plants clear of the warm draught from ducted or forced-air heating vents, which is even drier than radiator air.

Radiators are also usually off overnight, so a plant on a radiator sill gets a hot, dry day followed by a cold night against the glass — the worst of both worlds. Fix 3 deals with the night side.

Fix 2: Group plants and use a humidity tray

Once plants are clear of direct heat, the next job is the ambient dryness. Two low-cost tactics genuinely help, and it's worth being honest that both are modest — useful support rather than a cure for a fussy rainforest plant.

Group plants together. Plants release water vapour as they transpire, so a cluster of them raises the humidity in their own little pocket of air compared with a lone plant on a bare shelf. Stand pothos, philodendron, ferns, and prayer plants together in one spot and they create a shared microclimate that benefits the whole group. It's a real effect, but a gentle one — think of it as raising the floor, not solving a 20%-humidity room on its own.

Add a humidity tray. Sit pots on a wide, shallow tray of pebbles topped up with water, so the pot rests on the stones and above the waterline — never sitting in the water, which would waterlog the roots. As the water evaporates it lifts humidity in the air immediately around the plant. The RHS specifically recommends damp-pebble trays for ferns, calatheas, marantas, and orchids. The catch is range: the effect is only meaningful in the zone within roughly 10–15 cm of the tray surface, so it's ideal for small plants on a windowsill and does little for a tall fiddle-leaf fig whose canopy sits a metre above the tray.

If you have genuinely humidity-hungry plants — calathea, maidenhair fern, most orchids — grouping and trays will take the edge off but won't fully close the gap in a heated home. Fix 3: Rescue plants from cold window glass

The window is a paradox in winter. It's your best source of the scarce daylight plants need — see winter light for houseplants — but at night it turns into the coldest surface in the room.

The trouble spot is the pocket of air trapped between the glass and a closed curtain or blind. On a cold night, that pocket can drop well below the room temperature, and any leaf pressed against the pane is colder again. Most tropical houseplants are unhappy when they spend long periods below about 10–12°C (50°F), and they can suffer chilling injury — cell damage from cold that is still above freezing. Research from the University of Florida on tropical foliage plants such as dieffenbachia notes that chilling injury depends on both how cold it gets and how long the plant is exposed, with damage possible at temperatures well above freezing but below roughly 10°C (see UF/IFAS chilling injury research). The symptoms show up a day or two later: translucent or water-soaked patches, blackened or mushy areas, sudden leaf drop, or curling.

The fixes are all about the overnight cold:

  • Move plants inside the curtain at dusk. On frosty nights, bring plants off the sill and set them on the room side of the curtain, so they spend the night in room-temperature air rather than the cold pocket. Return them in the morning for the light.
  • Keep leaves off the glass. Even a couple of centimetres of air between foliage and the pane makes a difference. Pull the pot back from the window slightly.
  • Insulate the cold side. If moving plants nightly is impractical, slip a piece of card, a blind, or a heavy shade between the plant and the glass at night to break the chill.
  • Mind cold draughts too. Poorly sealed windows, external doors, and letterboxes create cold draughts that can chill a plant even away from the glass. Keep tropicals out of the direct draught line.

One caution that runs the other way: don't solve the cold-window problem by parking every plant next to a radiator. That just trades a cold-night problem for a hot-dry-day one. The goal is a stable, moderate spot — bright, off the glass at night, and clear of direct heat by day.

Which plants care most — and which shrug it off

Not every plant needs this fuss. Matching the effort to the plant saves you a lot of nightly shuffling.

Most sensitive to heating-season stress: calathea and maranta (prayer plants), maidenhair and Boston ferns, fittonia, most orchids, alocasia, and other thin- or velvet-leaved tropicals. These feel both the dry air and the cold glass keenly. Give them grouping, a humidity tray or humidifier, distance from radiators, and protection from cold windows.

Middle of the road: monstera, philodendron, peace lily, spider plant, dracaena, rubber plant, fiddle-leaf fig. They tolerate a heated room but will crisp their tips if left directly above a radiator or pressed to cold glass. Basic placement care keeps them fine.

Barely bothered: snake plant, ZZ plant, cacti, and most succulents. Adapted to dry air, they actually prefer the low winter humidity and want less water while heating is on, not more. A five-minute winter room audit

Walk the room once with these questions and you'll catch nearly every heating-season problem:

  1. Is any plant sitting directly above or beside a radiator, vent, or stove? Move it clear of the rising heat.
  2. Does any leaf touch a window pane? Pull the pot back a few centimetres.
  3. Which windows frost or run cold at night? Plan to move those plants inside the curtain at dusk, or insulate the glass side.
  4. Are the fussy tropicals grouped together with a humidity tray? Cluster them and add one.
  5. Are the succulents and snake plants somewhere dry and bright? Leave them be — and ease off the watering can.
