Why the leaves drop: it's light, not disease

The method is the mirror image of hardening off. Instead of easing a plant into more light, you ease it into less, so the change is gradual enough that fewer leaves get the signal to drop all at once.

Give them the brightest spot you've got

Since dim light is the root of the shock, the most protective thing you can do is maximise the light a returning plant receives. Iowa State's advice is simply to place plants brought back inside in bright, indirect light. Push that as far as you reasonably can for the first few weeks:

  • Use your sunniest window. A south- or west-facing sill (in the northern hemisphere) is prime autumn real estate. A plant that summered in strong sun can generally take direct autumn light at the glass, which is far weaker than summer sun outdoors.
