A summer outdoors does wonders for a houseplant — real daylight, moving air, warm nights — but it comes with a bill, and the bill is bugs. Outside, your plants rejoin the food chain. Aphids find the soft new growth, spider mites move in under the leaves, mealybugs tuck into the leaf joints, and slugs slither up through the drainage holes to sleep in the damp soil. None of this is a problem on the patio, where predators and weather keep numbers down. It becomes a problem the moment you carry an uninspected plant into a warm, still, predator-free room, where a handful of survivors breed unchecked all winter and jump to every plant on the shelf.

This is the most important step in the whole autumn move, and the one people skip. Debugging a plant on the doorstep takes twenty minutes; chasing spider mites across a dozen houseplants in January takes months. Why outdoor plants almost always come back with pests

It's not bad luck — it's arithmetic. A plant standing on a patio all summer is exposed to every flying, crawling and hopping insect in the garden, plus whatever blows in on the wind or drops from the tree above it. Winged pests like aphids and whiteflies land and lay eggs. Spider mites arrive on air currents and settle on the undersides of leaves where nothing disturbs them. Mealybugs and scale ride in on nearby plants or get carried by ants. And the pot itself — dark, moist, sheltered — is prime real estate for soil-dwellers like fungus gnats, slugs, sowbugs, earwigs and ants.

Outdoors this is a balanced system: ladybirds and lacewings eat aphids, birds pick off caterpillars, rain knocks mites off leaves, and cold nights slow everything down. Bring the plant inside and you strip all of that away in an afternoon. Indoor air is warm and still, there are no predators, and the pests breed faster in the heat than they ever did outside. A population you'd never have noticed on the patio becomes a visible infestation on the windowsill within weeks — Iowa State University Extension notes that common indoor pests like scale, mealybugs, aphids and whiteflies will be evident within a month or so of being indoors. By then they've usually spread.

The hitchhikers you're actually looking for

It helps to know your suspects, because they hide in different places and leave different clues. Split them into two groups: the ones on the plant, and the ones in the pot.

Leaf and stem dwellers:

  • Aphids — small, soft, pear-shaped, clustered on new growth and flower buds. Green is most common but they come in black, grey and pink too. Tell-tale sign: sticky "honeydew" on leaves below them, and sometimes sooty black mould growing on that honeydew.
  • Spider mites — almost too small to see, living on leaf undersides. You'll spot the damage first: fine pale stippling or mottling on the upper leaf surface. In a bad case, fine webbing spans the leaf axils and tips. The RHS notes glasshouse red spider mites are usually found on the lower leaf surface with their spherical eggs, and warm indoor rooms are exactly where they thrive.
  • Mealybugs — white, cottony blobs wedged into leaf axils, stem joints and leaf undersides. They look like tiny bits of fluff or cotton wool. A classic one to miss because they hide in the crevices.
  • Scale — small, immobile brown or tan bumps along stems and leaf veins. They look more like a growth than an insect and don't move, so people rub past them for weeks. Sticky honeydew is again a giveaway.
  • Whitefly — tiny white moth-like insects that flutter up in a cloud when you disturb the plant. They gather on leaf undersides.
  • Thrips — slender and hard to see; they leave silvery streaks and tiny black dots (their droppings) on leaves.

Soil and pot dwellers:

  • Fungus gnats — small dark flies that drift up from the soil when you water. Harmless to you, annoying indoors, and their larvae live in the top layer of moist compost.
  • Slugs and snails — they climb in through drainage holes and shelter in the damp soil or under the rim by day. You'll often find one curled up against the inside of the pot.
  • Sowbugs, earwigs and ants — general opportunists that set up home in the pot over summer. Ants in particular often signal aphids or scale, because they farm them for honeydew.

How to inspect a plant thoroughly

A proper inspection is slow and physical. You are not glancing at the plant — you are turning it over, parting the leaves, and looking in the places pests deliberately hide. Do this in good light, ideally outdoors, and work through the plant in the same order every time so you don't skip a zone.

  1. Turn the leaves over. The single most important move. Mites, whitefly, scale and aphids all favour the underside. Check every leaf you reasonably can, not just the top few.
  2. Part the leaf axils and stem joints. These crevices are where mealybugs and scale wedge themselves. Look for cotton-wool tufts and small immobile bumps.
  3. Run a finger along the stems. Feel for the raised bumps of scale and any sticky patches of honeydew, which point to a sap-feeder above.
  4. Look at new growth and flower buds. Aphids concentrate on the softest, freshest tissue.
  5. Inspect the soil surface. Poke the top layer and watch for movement — fungus-gnat larvae, sowbugs, or a slug pulled back from the light.
  6. Check the drainage holes and the pot rim. Slugs, sowbugs and ants come and go through the holes. Clemson Extension recommends taking plants out of their pots to see if anything has crawled through the drainage holes.
  7. Slip the plant out to check the rootball. For pots you can manage, Michigan State University Extension suggests you water the plant, then slide it out of the container and check the soil, especially at the bottom, where soil-dwellers gather against the drainage layer.

A hand lens or the magnifier on your phone earns its keep here — spider mites and thrips are genuinely hard to see with the naked eye until the population is large. And don't declare a plant clean on one look. Eggs hatch on a delay, so a plant that passes today can show pests in a fortnight, which is exactly why quarantine matters.

Treat before they spread: rinse, soap, soil

Once you've inspected, treat every returning plant as a precaution — not only the ones with obvious pests. The routine below is the standard Extension approach, and the order matters: do it outdoors, and give the plant time before it comes in.

Start with a firm rinse. A strong stream of water from a hose knocks a surprising share of pests — mites, aphids, whitefly — straight off the leaves. Iowa State Extension advises you thoroughly rinse off all the foliage while still outside and let it dry before moving indoors. Turn the leaves so the water hits the undersides too.

Then treat with insecticidal soap. For the pests a rinse won't shift, insecticidal soap is the go-to first-line product because it's low-toxicity and breaks down quickly. Clemson Extension's method is to gently wash the leaves and stems, let them dry, then spray the entire plant — upper and lower leaf surfaces — plus the soil and the pot with an insecticidal soap, noting the product is safe for people and pets. Coverage is everything with soap: it only works on contact, so anything you miss survives. Their guidance is to leave the plant outside a few more days, reapply, and bring it in two or three days after the second treatment.

Don't forget the soil. Soil-dwellers won't care about a leaf spray. Flooding or submerging the pot in a tub of water for a spell drives many soil pests up to the surface and out. If a plant is due for fresh soil anyway, autumn re-entry is a fair time to repot into clean potting mix, which removes a lot of the hidden soil population in one go — just don't stack a heavy repot onto a plant already coping with the move if you can avoid it.

Two important cautions on any product you use:

  • Read the label and spot-test. Some plants — including many ferns and some succulents — react badly to soaps and oils. Clemson advises checking whether your plant is listed on the label, and if it isn't, testing a small area first, because sensitivity symptoms can take seven to ten days to appear. Treat one plant, wait, then do the rest.
  • Keep specific chemical choices to the experts. For anything beyond a rinse and insecticidal soap — horticultural oils, systemic drenches, stronger insecticides — follow current label directions and lean on your regional guidance rather than a blog. Quarantine: the two to three weeks that protect everything else

Here's the humbling truth: even a careful inspection and a soap treatment will occasionally miss something. Eggs are tiny, some hatch after you've finished, and a single surviving female mite can rebuild a population fast. Quarantine is your safety net for exactly that.

Keep returning plants isolated from your existing indoor collection — a different room is ideal, or at least a separate area with real distance, since mites crawl and fungus gnats fly between plants that share a shelf. Iowa State Extension recommends keeping plants isolated from other houseplants for three to four weeks, which lines up neatly with how long it takes hidden pests to become visible. Inspect the quarantined plants every few days, turning leaves and checking the soil, and re-treat at the first sign of trouble. Only once a plant has gone a couple of weeks clean does it earn a place back among the others — cheap insurance against a winter spent fighting mites across the whole windowsill.

Don't overlook the pot, the saucer and the timing

The plant isn't the only thing coming indoors. Wipe down the outside of the pot and, critically, clean the saucer — old debris, algae and eggs collect there, and a grubby saucer can reintroduce fungus gnats to a plant you just cleaned. Give the rim and the drainage holes a look, since that's where slugs and sowbugs hide.

Timing ties the whole job together, because you need daylight, warmth and dry-off time to do it properly — and you need to finish before the cold forces your hand. Bring plants back indoors when nighttime temperatures start dipping consistently into the 50s°F; Iowa State Extension warns that most houseplants suffer damage in the mid-to-lower 40s°F and die at freezing. In the UK, that means bringing tender plants in once nights settle toward 10°C, well before the first frost. Don't wait for the first cold night and then rush every plant inside unchecked in the dark — that's precisely how the pests get a free ride.
