What's eating my heuchera villosa 'autumn bride'?

Heuchera villosa 'Autumn Bride' is more slug-resistant than typical heucheras due to its villosa (hairy) leaves, but vine weevil is a serious threat — especially in containers. Slugs target new growth, and vine weevil grubs silently destroy roots. Deer may browse it but generally prefer hostas growing nearby.

Adults notch leaf margins; C-shaped larvae eat roots causing sudden wilting and plant crown collapse, especially in pots. Apply nematodes (Steinernema kraussei) to soil in late summer/early autumn; check and replace pot compost regularly.

Holes in young leaves and around the crown, mainly in spring; hairy texture reduces but does not eliminate damage. Iron-phosphate pellets; beer traps; gritty mulch around the crown as a deterrent.

Characteristic U-shaped notches around leaf margins at night throughout summer. Shake plants over white paper at night to collect adults; sticky barriers around pot bases.
