What's eating my cyprus cedar?

Cyprus Cedar (Cedrus brevifolia) faces bark beetle borers as its most serious threat, alongside cedar aphids and scale insects. Deer may browse young trees. Infestations are often stress-triggered by drought. Maintain tree vigour through adequate watering and avoid wounding the bark to reduce borer susceptibility.

Entry holes and sawdust-like frass on bark; yellowing or dying branches (flagging); resin bleed at trunk. Remove and destroy infested branches promptly. Keep trees well-watered to reduce stress. Preventive pyrethroid bark sprays before adult flight in spring for high-value specimens.

Sticky honeydew and sooty mould on foliage; distorted shoot tips; large colonies visible on stems in spring. Blast off with a strong water jet. Apply insecticidal soap or neem oil to colonies. Encourage natural predators (ladybirds, lacewings).

Whitish encrusted scales on foliage; needles yellow, drop prematurely; branch dieback in heavy infestations. Dormant horticultural oil spray in late winter smothers overwintering scales. Systemic imidacloprid soil drench for persistent infestations on larger trees.
