How to prune trazel
In the first three years remove competing leaders to establish a clear trunk or chosen framework. Thereafter thin overcrowded laterals and remove dead or rubbing wood with clean cuts to the branch collar. Pull or cut suckers from the base as they appear.
Trazel (Corylus × colurnoides, a hazel–Turkish hazel hybrid) is pruned similarly to hazel but grows more tree-like. Establish a clear trunk or multi-stem framework in early years. Remove suckers, dead wood, and crossing branches annually. Avoid hard coppicing — unlike pure hazel, trazel develops a more permanent scaffold.
