About Ord River Sundew

Drosera ordensis · also called Ord River sundew · tropical

Drosera ordensis is a tropical carnivorous sundew in the petiolaris complex, endemic to the Ord River catchment area of the Kimberley region, Western Australia, where it colonises seasonally inundated red sandy soils and rocky outcrops. Like all petiolaris group sundews it follows a pronounced monsoon cycle — growing vigorously in the hot wet season and retreating to the rhizome in the warm dry season. The single most critical care point is to maintain warmth year-round (never below 15 °C) even during the drier rest period, as cold combined with moisture triggers fatal rot. Drosera is not listed as toxic to cats or dogs by the ASPCA and is considered non-toxic to pets.

Mature size: Rosettes typically 8–14 cm across at peak growth.

Watch for — Rhizome rot after the monsoon season: Reducing watering too slowly when the plant enters its dry rest, especially at lower temperatures, promotes Pythium and other root pathogens. Taper watering gradually over 2–3 weeks as temperatures rise towards the end of the wet season in cultivation.

Indoor size vs how big it gets in the wild

Ord River Sundew is a naturally small plant — it stays shelf- and desk-sized for its whole life, so it never becomes a space problem. Indoors and in a pot, expect rosettes typically 8–14 cm across at peak growth.. A pot, your light levels and a little pruning are what set the final size in a home, far more than the plant's theoretical potential.

It grows mostly by adding leaves, offsets or a slightly wider rosette rather than gaining height — the footprint barely changes year to year.

Growth rate and years to mature

Ord River Sundew is a fast grower. Realistically, expect two to four years from a young plant to a room-filling specimen in good light. Its feeding profile backs this up: offer small insects (fruit flies, gnats, small crickets) directly to active leaves 2–5 times per growing season; avoid any soil fertiliser.

Ord River Sundew size — frequently asked questions

How big does ord river sundew get?

Ord River Sundew reaches rosettes typically 8–14 cm across at peak growth. when grown indoors. It grows mostly by adding leaves, offsets or a slightly wider rosette rather than gaining height — the footprint barely changes year to year.

Is ord river sundew slow or fast growing?

Ord River Sundew is a fast grower. Expect two to four years from a young plant to a room-filling specimen in good light. Ord River Sundew is a naturally small plant — it stays shelf- and desk-sized for its whole life, so it never becomes a space problem.

How long does ord river sundew take to reach full size?

Roughly two to four years from a young plant to a room-filling specimen in good light. Light, pot size and feeding move that timeline more than anything else.

How do I keep ord river sundew smaller?

Divide or remove offsets when the pot looks crowded to keep ord river sundew to a single tidy clump. Keeping it slightly pot-bound and easing back on feed naturally caps the size. Pinch or remove the oldest, tiredest leaves so energy goes into a compact, fresh-looking plant.

How can I make ord river sundew grow bigger or faster?

It is already in good light; consistent warmth and a balanced feed in spring and summer are the only levers. A small step up in pot size every couple of years gives the roots a little more room without triggering a size jump. Feed lightly through the growing season; this plant simply will not race however hard you push it.
