Pruning mondo grass — FAQ
When should I prune mondo grass?
Late winter (outdoor); as needed year-round (houseplant). Outdoors: shear the entire clump to 2–3 inches above soil level once per year. As a houseplant: use clean scissors to trim individual brown leaf tips or remove completely dead leaves at the base.
How often does mondo grass need pruning?
Annually (outdoor); as needed (houseplant). Mondo Grass (Ophiopogon japonicus) requires minimal pruning. It is not a true grass but a lily-family perennial. Grown outdoors, shear or mow in late winter before new leaves emerge to remove tatty foliage. As a houseplant, simply pull or cut off any brown or yellowing leaf tips as needed. No hard pruning is necessary.
