How to prune flame vine

Immediately after flowering finishes in late spring. Cut back flowered stems by one-half to two-thirds after blooming ends. Remove any dead, damaged, or tangled stems completely. On very large established plants, cut the whole framework back hard every few years to rejuvenate. Tie in new growth as it extends through summer.

Annually after flowering. Flame vine is a rampant tropical climber that produces its spectacular orange blooms in winter and spring on growth from the previous season. Prune after flowering has finished — late spring — to control size and encourage vigorous new shoots that will carry next season's display. Hard pruning is tolerated and often necessary on established plants.
