Flame vine problems — and how to fix them
Flame vine (Pyrostegia venusta) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Invasive / rampant growth
This vine grows very aggressively and can smother trees and structures if not regularly pruned. Cut back hard after flowering each year to keep it in check and direct its energy into bloom production.
Root rot
The main cultural failure point. In containers or heavy soils, overwatering rapidly causes root rot. Ensure excellent drainage and allow the soil to dry out between watering cycles.
Failure to flower
Usually caused by insufficient direct sunlight or excessive nitrogen fertiliser promoting foliage at the expense of blooms. Move to a sunnier position and switch to a low-nitrogen, high-potassium fertiliser.
