Once 2–3 fruits per vine have set (midsummer). Pinch or cut the main vine tip beyond the last developing fruit. Trim secondary vines back to 2–3 leaves beyond a developing fruit. Use sharp, clean secateurs to avoid crushing hollow stems.
How often does acorn squash need pruning?
Once during the fruiting season. Acorn squash is largely self-managing. For better fruit sizing, pinch growing tips once 2–3 fruits per vine have set to stop further stem extension and direct energy into those fruits. In very vigorous plants, trim secondary side vines to keep the patch manageable. No other pruning is needed for a normal garden crop.
