Pruning squash — FAQ
When should I prune squash?
Pinch vine tips mid-season once several fruits have set; remove diseased leaves as they appear. Cut the growing tip of each main stem with clean pruners, just above a leaf node, once the vine has produced 2-3 fruits and has reached an inconvenient length. Remove heavily mildewed or dead leaves at the stem to improve airflow. Do not remove healthy leaves in excess — squash needs significant leaf area to ripen fruit.
How often does squash need pruning?
Once or twice mid-season; tidy diseased leaves as needed. Squash can be pruned to limit sprawl and improve fruit production, though it is not strictly required. Pinch off the growing tip of each main vine after it has set several fruits to stop excessive spreading and push energy into the existing fruit. Remove dead, yellowed, or powdery mildew-affected leaves throughout the season.
