Pruning clivia — FAQ
When should I prune clivia?
After flowering ends, typically late spring. Cut the spent flower stem as close to the base as possible using clean, sharp scissors or secateurs. Pull away or cut off individual yellowed leaves at the lowest point where they meet the plant base.
How often does clivia need pruning?
Once per year after flowering; remove damaged leaves as needed. Clivia requires minimal pruning. After flowering, cut the spent flower stalk down to the base once blooms fade, to redirect energy away from seed production. Remove any yellowed or damaged leaves at the base. Beyond deadheading stalks, clivia does not need shaping or structural pruning.
