How to prune celeriac 'monarch'

Begin removing lower leaves and side shoots from midsummer (July in the UK/US) onward. Snap off basal suckers by hand. Cut the lowest yellowing leaves cleanly at the stem every 3–4 weeks through summer and early autumn, progressively clearing the bottom third of the plant. Leave the upper leaf canopy fully intact.

Every 3–4 weeks from midsummer to harvest; remove damaged leaves as they appear. Celeriac 'Monarch' needs targeted pruning to develop a clean, large bulb. From midsummer, remove lower leaves and side shoots (suckers) growing at the base to direct energy into the swelling root and improve airflow. Do not strip upper foliage. Remove yellowed or damaged leaves anytime. Harvest the whole plant before hard frost.
