Transylvanian Hepatica problems — and how to fix them
Transylvanian Hepatica (Hepatica transsilvanica) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Overcrowding
More vigorous than other hepaticas and can outgrow its space within 5–6 years. Divide congested clumps in late summer to maintain vigour and air circulation.
Late frost damage to flowers
Very early blooms (sometimes February in mild areas) can be nipped by late frosts. Cover with horticultural fleece on frosty nights during the bloom period.
Crown rot in wet winters
Persistent winter wet causes rot where drainage is poor. Raise planting on a slight ridge or incorporate sharp grit generously to improve drainage.
