Golden Oregano problems — and how to fix them

Golden Oregano (Origanum vulgare 'Aureum') is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.

Root rot in wet soil

The most common cause of death, especially over winter in heavy or poorly drained soil. Plant on a slope or raised bed, and incorporate grit at planting. Avoid overhead watering and reduce irrigation from autumn onward.

Colour reversion to green

Insufficient light causes golden foliage to fade toward plain green. Ensure full sun exposure; remove any all-green shoots promptly to prevent them from outcompeting the golden form.

Aphid infestation

Soft new growth attracts aphids in spring. Knock off with a strong water jet or apply insecticidal soap. Avoid over-fertilising with nitrogen, which makes plants more attractive to aphids.

Prevent golden oregano problems before they start

Most golden oregano issues are care-mismatch, not bad luck. Dial in the basics:
