Troubleshooting
Sensation Mixed cosmos problems — and how to fix them
Sensation Mixed cosmos (Cosmos bipinnatus 'Sensation Mixed') is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Flopping and stem collapse
Tall stems blow over or collapse when grown in rich soil, over-fertilised, or in exposed sites. Grow in lean soil, avoid feeding, and stake plants early in windy positions. Planting in groups also provides mutual support.
Aphid infestations
Dense colonies of green or black aphids on growing tips in early summer cause distorted new growth. Blast with a strong jet of water or apply insecticidal soap. Encourage beneficial insects such as lacewings and ladybugs; avoid broad-spectrum insecticides.
Powdery mildew in late summer
White powdery coating appears on older foliage as nights cool in late summer. This is largely cosmetic at end-of-season. To delay onset, space plants generously, water at the base, and remove affected lower leaves. Treat with neem oil or potassium bicarbonate if desired.
Prevent sensation mixed cosmos problems before they start
Most sensation mixed cosmos issues are care-mismatch, not bad luck. Dial in the basics:
