Chioggia Beet problems — and how to fix them
Chioggia Beet (Beta vulgaris subsp. vulgaris 'Chioggia') is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Bolting
Premature flowering triggered by heat or cold stress on young plants. Sow at the right season, avoid exposing seedlings to prolonged cold, and keep moisture steady.
Internal black heart (boron deficiency)
Dark corky spots inside the root from low boron, worse in dry or alkaline-locked soils. Maintain even moisture and correct soil pH; supplement boron only if a test confirms deficiency.
Crowded clustered seedlings
Each beet 'seed' is a fruit holding several seeds, producing clumps that compete. Thin seedlings to one every 8-10 cm (3-4 in) so roots can size up.
Cercospora leaf spot
Tan spots with reddish margins in warm, humid weather. Space plants, rotate crops, water at the soil line, and remove badly infected leaves.
