Genus guide
Picea — 33 species
Picea is a genus of roughly 35 coniferous evergreen trees grown for their conical form, stiff needles, and year-round structure. Species such as White Spruce (P. glauca), Colorado Blue Spruce (P. pungens), and Oriental Spruce (P. orientalis) demand full sun and grow best outdoors in USDA zones 2–7, with deep, well-drained soil and modest supplemental watering during dry spells — established trees are drought-tolerant once rooted. Toxicity varies by species: some Picea are listed by the ASPCA as non-toxic to cats and dogs, while others have not been fully evaluated, so confirm each species before bringing one into a pet household.
