Genus guide
Juniperus — 37 species
Junipers are resilient, evergreen conifers ranging from towering trees like Eastern Red Cedar to ground-hugging spreaders like Creeping Juniper. They thrive in full sun and demand excellent drainage — overwatering is their primary enemy. Chinese Juniper and Common Juniper tolerate drought and poor soils once established, making them low-maintenance landscape staples. All Juniperus species are toxic to cats and dogs: the foliage, berries, and bark contain compounds that can cause vomiting, lethargy, and kidney irritation. Keep them outdoors and well out of pets' reach.
