Calamagrostis — 9 species
Calamagrostis (feather reed grass) is a genus of strongly upright, cool-season ornamental grasses, including Korean feather reed grass, bluejoint reedgrass, and the widely grown wood small-reed. They perform best in full sun but tolerate partial shade, especially in hotter climates where afternoon shelter prevents leaf scorch. Soil should be consistently moist to moderately wet; unlike many ornamental grasses, Calamagrostis handles heavier, less freely draining soils well. According to the ASPCA, feather reed grass is non-toxic to cats and dogs, making the entire genus a safe choice for pet-friendly gardens.
