Aeonium is a genus of striking succulent rosette plants native to the Canary Islands and the Mediterranean, encompassing architectural species like the deep-purple Black Rose (A. arboreum 'Zwartkop'), the variegated Sunburst, and the stately Noble Aeonium. Unlike many succulents, Aeoniums are winter growers that go dormant in summer heat; they prefer bright light with some afternoon shade in hot climates and need well-drained soil watered when the top inch dries out, with very little water during summer dormancy. All Aeonium species are toxic to cats and dogs.
