What's eating my zantedeschia pentlandii?

Zantedeschia pentlandii is a yellow-spathed South African calla species used in garden borders and containers. Like all Zantedeschia, aphids are the most frequent problem. Slugs and snails readily attack foliage in cool, damp weather. Thrips streak the yellow spathes. Deer and rabbits may browse plants in exposed garden settings.

Soft-bodied insects massed on flower stems and leaf axils; honeydew, sooty mould, and leaf curl. Knock off with water jets; apply insecticidal soap or pyrethrin spray; foster ladybird populations nearby.

Ragged holes in broad leaves; young emerging shoots eaten at soil level after wet conditions. Use iron phosphate slug bait; apply nematode (Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita) soil drench in spring and autumn.

Silvery-white flecking and streaking on the yellow spathe; flowers look bleached in severe cases. Remove affected spathes; apply spinosad-based spray; under glass, introduce Amblyseius cucumeris predatory mites.
