What's eating my woolly thyme?

Woolly Thyme's dense, fuzzy foliage traps moisture and makes it particularly susceptible to root rot and crown rot, but in terms of pests, spittlebugs and aphids are the main threats. Slugs can penetrate the mat in wet weather. Spider mites attack in dry heat. The hairy texture does limit some flying insects from landing easily.

White frothy blobs lodged within the woolly mat; nymphs suck sap and may stunt stem tips. Blast with water hose; remove by hand; damage is usually minor on healthy mats.

Colonies on new growth tips; leaves distort; honeydew collects on the woolly surface encouraging mold. Insecticidal soap spray; neem oil; prune affected tips to remove colonies.

Sections of mat hollowed out from the inside; slime trails trapped in the woolly stems. Iron phosphate pellets; hand-pick at night; ensure good drainage to reduce slug habitat.

Stippled, dull foliage; fine webbing across woolly stems; worst in hot, dry, sunny spots. Gentle misting; neem oil; improve air circulation by thinning dense patches.
