What's eating my tojen toad lily?

Tojen Toad Lily, an arching hybrid Tricyrtis, is vulnerable to the same pests as the genus: slugs can destroy new spring shoots outright, and rabbits browse stems and buds. Aphids carrying Tricyrtis floral virus can permanently alter flower coloring. Beyond these, Tojen is generally healthy with minimal insect pest problems.

Emerging spring shoots eaten to the ground; holes and notched edges on established leaves through the season. Apply iron phosphate slug pellets and diatomaceous earth around the crown as growth begins in spring. Beer traps placed nearby are an effective addition.

Stems and flower buds cleanly browsed; plants repeatedly grazed produce stunted stems and very few flowers by autumn. Wire mesh cages or fencing are the most reliable solution. Repellent sprays can deter rabbits but must be reapplied frequently.

Soft-bodied colonies on shoot tips and stems; vector of Tricyrtis floral virus, which causes permanent mottling and purple discoloration of flowers. Dislodge with a water jet; use insecticidal soap for persistent colonies. Remove and bin any virus-symptomatic plants to prevent spread.
