What's eating my steudnera colocasiifolia?

Steudnera colocasiifolia, a rare Southeast Asian aroid grown as an indoor tropical, is primarily challenged by spider mites in low-humidity conditions and mealybugs in leaf axils. Aphids may colonise tender new growth, and fungus gnats breed in overly wet potting media. Maintaining humidity above 60% and avoiding waterlogging prevents most pest problems.

Fine pale stippling and bronzing on leaf surfaces; webbing visible on undersides when infestations are heavy. Raise humidity with a humidifier or pebble tray; spray neem oil or insecticidal soap weekly until clear.

White cottony deposits at leaf axils and along main veins; honeydew causes sticky foliage and sooty mould. Dab with 70% isopropyl alcohol; spray entire plant with neem oil; isolate from other houseplants immediately.

Soft insects massed on emerging leaves and petioles; sticky residue and slightly distorted new growth. Rinse with tepid water; apply insecticidal soap spray. Check neighbouring plants for spread.

Root damage from larvae in wet compost; wilting despite moist soil; adults seen hovering at soil level. Allow top layer of mix to dry; apply Bti drench; place yellow sticky traps to capture adults.
