What's eating my stapelia grandiflora?

Stapelia grandiflora (giant starfish flower) is most threatened by mealybugs — both stem and root forms — which are the dominant pest of all stapeliads indoors. Aphids sometimes attack soft new growth. Root rot from overwatering is the main non-pest killer. Inspect stem bases and roots regularly.

White cottony fluff in stem joints or at the base; root mealybugs leave white wax deposits below soil — misshapen or stunted new stems are a warning sign. Dab colonies with 70% isopropyl alcohol or neem oil solution. For root mealybugs, unpot, clean roots, air-dry, and repot into fresh compost. Use a systemic imidacloprid drench if infestation is persistent.

Clusters of small soft-bodied insects on new stem tips and flower buds, causing distorted growth and sticky honeydew residue. Knock off with a stream of water or wipe with a damp cloth. Treat with insecticidal soap or diluted neem oil spray. Repeat as needed until clear.

Brown or tan waxy bumps on stems that are easy to mistake for natural texture; heavy infestations weaken stems and cause yellowing. Scrape off individual scales with a soft toothbrush or cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol. Follow with a neem oil spray to catch crawlers.
