What's eating my 'purple haze' carrot?

Purple Haze Carrot is most threatened by carrot root fly, whose maggots tunnel through the root and ruin the harvest. Aphids and carrot psyllid weaken the foliage. Rabbits and deer will eat tops if access is not controlled. The purple pigment offers no special insect resistance — physical barriers are essential.

Fine rusty-brown tunnels throughout the root flesh; foliage yellows and wilts; damage discovered only at harvest, making roots inedible. Erect a 60–90 cm solid barrier of fleece or polythene around the bed — the fly is a low-flier. Grow under insect mesh. Avoid thinning in mid-afternoon when the fly is most active. Rotate crops.

Yellow-green aphids curl and distort carrot leaves; they also vector carrot motley dwarf virus, causing red and yellow leaf discolouration. Cover with mesh to exclude flying aphids. Hose off colonies. Remove nearby wild umbellifers that host the aphid in winter.

Carrot tops grazed cleanly at or below soil level; roots can be dug out and partially eaten, leaving characteristic gnaw marks. Surround beds with fine-gauge wire netting buried 20 cm into the ground. Check for gaps nightly when rabbits are active.
