What's eating my prairie penstemon?

Prairie Penstemon (Penstemon cobaea) grows in dry limestone prairies and is largely pest-resistant when sited correctly. Aphids attack tender spring growth, root-feeding larvae can strike in overly wet soil, and deer and rabbits browse the large flowers. Ensure sharp drainage and avoid overhead irrigation to keep this native thriving.

Soft clusters on new shoots and flower buds; honeydew and minor leaf distortion. Remove by hand or strong water spray; use insecticidal soap only if infestation is heavy.

Roots chewed below soil level; plant wilts without obvious above-ground pest presence. Apply beneficial nematodes (Steinernema) to moist soil in spring; improve drainage to reduce larval survival.

Large, showy flower stalks snapped or grazed before bloom; foliage browsed at edges of garden beds. Use repellent sprays or wire cages around young plants; established clumps recover well if browsed lightly.
