What's eating my physocarpus opulifolius 'little devil'?

'Little Devil' is a compact ninebark equally resistant to pests as larger cultivars. Aphids occasionally settle on new dark-red growth, and leaf-rolling caterpillars may appear in spring. Its small, dense form makes it somewhat vulnerable to rabbit browsing at ground level. Healthy, well-fed plants shrug off most attacks unaided.

Soft insect colonies on fresh shoot tips; honeydew and mild distortion of new foliage. Blast with water; insecticidal soap or neem oil spray for persistent infestations.

Foliage rolled and secured with silk; browning inside the roll where larvae feed. Hand-pick affected leaves; apply Bt spray early in the season.

Bark and young shoots gnawed at ground level — worse on compact plants with accessible stems. Use fine-mesh wire guards around the base; repellent sprays around the planting area.
