What's eating my physocarpus opulifolius 'coppertina'?

'Coppertina' ninebark is a robust, largely pest-resistant garden shrub. Aphids can colonise new growth in spring, and leaf-rolling moth caterpillars occasionally disfigure foliage. Deer and rabbits may browse young plants. Its drought tolerance once established makes it less stressed and therefore less susceptible to pest outbreaks.

Soft colonies on shoot tips; honeydew, minor leaf curl on the coppery new growth. Knock off with water; apply insecticidal soap or neem oil for heavy populations.

Rolled leaves tied with silk; feeding inside the roll causing distortion. Hand-pick rolled leaves; targeted Bt spray in early spring.

Shoot tips and foliage browsed, especially on newly planted specimens. Spray deer repellent; use fencing or individual wire cages until established.
