What's eating my peperomia arifolia?

Peperomia arifolia is a tropical peperomia with arum-like leaves grown as an indoor plant. Mealybugs are the primary threat, sheltering along the prominent leaf veins and stem joints. Spider mites attack in dry conditions. Fungus gnats can develop in wet compost. The bold leaves make early detection easier than on smaller-leaved species.

White woolly clusters along leaf veins and in the axils; honeydew and sooty mold on leaf surface. Dab colonies with a cotton swab soaked in 70% isopropyl alcohol; spray all leaf surfaces with diluted neem oil; repeat weekly for 3 weeks.

Pale, dusty stippling on the large leaf surfaces; webbing at the base of petioles in dry indoor air. Rinse foliage under tepid water; follow with insecticidal soap spray; raise humidity to at least 50%.

Larvae damage roots in waterlogged soil; adults fly at soil level and around the base of stems. Water only when the top inch of soil is dry; apply Bti soil drench; use sticky yellow traps.
