What's eating my penstemon barbatus 'rondo'?

Penstemon barbatus 'Rondo', a compact tubular-flowered beardtongue, is generally robust and trouble-free. Aphids are the most likely pest, clustering on stems and flower spikes. Slugs and snails can damage young foliage and emerging shoots in spring, particularly in wetter gardens. Overall, serious infestations are uncommon.

Soft colonies on stems, flower buds, and undersides of leaves; sticky honeydew encourages sooty mould and attracts ants. Spray with insecticidal soap or neem oil solution, covering all surfaces. Introduce aphid parasitoids (Aphidius spp.) in enclosed or sheltered gardens.

Irregular holes in young leaves and stems at soil level, especially in spring; slime trails visible after wet nights. Scatter iron phosphate pellets around the base. Use grit mulch to deter movement toward plants. Hand-pick at dusk after rain.
