What's eating my 'paris market' carrot?

Paris Market Carrot's short, globe-shaped root is still fully vulnerable to carrot root fly tunnelling and aphid infestations. Its compact size means deer and rabbits may prefer neighbouring taller crops, but both will graze the foliage. Slugs rarely damage the root but can shred seedlings. A fine mesh barrier is the essential first defence.

Rusty tunnels throughout the small, round root; even light infestation ruins most of the flesh given the carrot's compact size. Use a 75 cm vertical fleece or mesh barrier around the bed (the fly does not fly high). Grow fully under insect netting. Harvest promptly once mature — roots left in soil over summer attract second-generation adults.

Colonies curl and distort feathery leaves; virus transmission causes reddish or yellowed foliage and reduced root size. Mesh exclusion prevents alighting aphids. Remove infested leaves early. Avoid planting near willows or hedgerows, which host overwintering aphids.

Seedlings and young carrot tops grazed at ground level in wet spring or autumn; the round root may be surface-scarred in waterlogged soil. Sow in well-prepared, well-drained beds. Thin promptly to reduce damp hiding spots. Use beer traps or iron phosphate pellets at sowing time.
