What's eating my nymphaea capensis?

Nymphaea capensis (Cape blue water lily) is a tender tropical species especially vulnerable to water lily aphids and leaf-mining beetles. In warmer climates it may also face grass carp damage in naturalized waterways. Avoid pesticides near pond water; fish stocking and manual removal are the primary defenses.

Dense colonies on pads and flower stalks cause yellowed, puckered leaves, deformed flowers, and black sooty mold coating. Dislodge with a strong water jet so fish consume them. Remove and bag heavily infested pads. No pond-safe chemical control is recommended.

Skeletonized tracks across pad surfaces turn brown and rot, weakening the plant and reducing bloom count. Knock larvae into the water for fish. Remove infested pads promptly to break the breeding cycle.

Ducks and geese graze on tropical water lily pads and flowers, especially in shallow ornamental ponds where plants are accessible. Use pond netting or monofilament deterrent lines over the water surface during peak growing season.
