What's eating my nepenthes × hookeriana?

Nepenthes × hookeriana is a robust lowland hybrid pitcher plant widely grown as an indoor tropical. It is among the easiest Nepenthes to keep but is still vulnerable to mealybugs, scale, and spider mites in the warm, often lower-humidity environments of homes. Fungus gnats can establish in its moist growing medium.

Cottony white residue in leaf folds and along midribs; sticky honeydew coating; leaves yellow and pitchers fail to form properly. Dab with alcohol swabs; follow with insecticidal soap spray covering all leaf surfaces and pitcher interiors. Repeat every 7 days for a month.

Hard or soft waxy bumps adhered to stems and leaves; yellowing; sooty mould on honeydew deposits. Scrape off manually with a soft brush. Wipe down with neem-oil solution. Repeat scraping and spraying weekly until no live scale is found.

Pale yellow stippling across leaf blades; webbing between pitchers; severe infestations cause leaf drop. Increase humidity around the plant. Spray with water, then apply insecticidal soap or neem oil every 5–7 days; 3 treatment cycles are usually needed.

Larvae feed on roots in the organic medium; heavy populations cause wilting and nutrient deficiency symptoms. Apply Bti drench to the growing medium. Allow the very top of the medium to dry between waterings. Use yellow sticky traps for adult monitoring.
