What's eating my narrow-leaved evening primrose?

Narrow-Leaved Evening Primrose (Oenothera fruticosa) is one of the most pest-resistant Oenothera species with no serious insect or disease problems on record. Opportunistic chewing insects may nibble foliage occasionally. Deer and rabbits may browse young plants. It is largely self-sufficient and rarely needs pest intervention once established in a well-drained position.

Young stems and leaves nipped back, particularly on newly planted specimens; repeated browsing can prevent establishment. Protect young plants with wire mesh guards or repellent sprays until established; mature clumps generally recover well from occasional browsing.

Scattered small round holes in leaves, especially on young spring growth; damage is cosmetic and rarely affects plant vigour. Cover seedlings with fleece in early spring; no treatment usually needed on established plants as they outgrow damage quickly.

Occasional small colonies on new shoot tips causing mild leaf curl; honeydew deposits attract sooty mould. A sharp water jet dislodges most colonies; insecticidal soap only if infestation persists; natural predators normally keep numbers in check.
