What's eating my mountain pieris?

Mountain Pieris (Pieris floribunda) is native to the eastern US mountains and is notably more lacebug-resistant than Pieris japonica, but the pest can still occur on plants in warm sunny sites. Vine weevil is a greater relative threat. Deer and rabbits will browse foliage and young stems, particularly in rural or woodland settings.

Scalloped notches along leaf edges from adult feeding at night; larvae destroy roots, causing sudden wilting and plant death. Apply Steinernema kraussei nematodes to moist soil in August–September. Use a systemic insecticide drench for severe infestations in containers.

Grey stippling on upper leaf surfaces and dark excrement on undersides (less severe on Pieris floribunda than on P. japonica). Plant in shaded, cool positions to reduce risk. Spray underside of leaves with insecticidal soap or neem oil if stippling becomes severe.

Foliage and young stems browsed down, especially in winter when alternative browse is scarce. Protect with tree guards or deer fencing. Apply deer repellent spray through autumn and winter.
