What's eating my rose grape?

Medinilla magnifica is a humidity-loving tropical that rarely suffers heavy pest pressure, but spider mites are a real threat when indoor air is too dry. Mealybugs hide along the distinctive ribbed stems and in flower bracts. Scale insects can establish on woody canes. Maintain 60%+ humidity to keep mites at bay.

Silvery or bronze stippling on large leaves; fine webbing on undersides; leaves dull and eventually drop in low humidity. Raise humidity with a pebble tray or humidifier; spray leaf undersides with neem oil or insecticidal soap weekly for 3–4 weeks.

White waxy fluff tucked in the grooves of ribbed stems and between flower bracts; slow growth and honeydew. Remove with an alcohol-dipped cotton swab; follow with neem oil drench; repeat every 10 days for a month.

Flat tan or brown bumps along woody stems; weakened canes; sticky honeydew and possible sooty mould. Scrape off with a toothbrush dipped in soapy water; apply horticultural oil; treat twice, 2 weeks apart.
