What's eating my mamoncillo?

Mamoncillo (Melicoccus bijugatus) is relatively pest-resistant but fruit flies, scale insects, and stink bugs are known to attack it in subtropical and tropical gardens. Fruit flies cause the most economic damage by infesting ripening fruit. Regular harvest of ripe fruit, sanitation, and monitoring traps are the core defenses.

Larvae tunnel inside ripe fruit, causing internal rot and premature fruit drop; infested fruit may ooze or collapse. Use protein-bait traps to monitor and reduce adult populations; harvest fruit promptly when ripe; destroy fallen fruit to break the cycle.

Armored or soft scales colonize twigs and leaf undersides, weakening stems and leaving sticky honeydew that encourages sooty mold. Apply horticultural oil or insecticidal soap during the crawler stage; prune heavily infested branches; encourage natural predators such as parasitic wasps.

Piercing feeding on fruit skin creates sunken, discolored lesions and internal corky tissue, making fruit unmarketable. Hand-pick adults in early morning; use fine mesh netting over smaller trees; remove weedy cover crops around the planting that harbour bugs.
